Krasiński Garden in Warsaw

Ogród Krasinskich

The Krasiński Garden in Warsaw – a city park in Warsaw, in the Śródmieście (City Centre) borough, Muranów estate. The garden is located at the back of the Krasiński Palace.

The beginning

The Krasiński Garden was designed in the Baroque style and established in 1676 as part of the palace and garden complex known as the Krasiński Palace. At first, it had an area of 3.4 ha and was Warsaw's largest park until the Saski Garden was established. The garden was opened to the public in 1766 after it had been bought by the State as the seat of the Crown Treasury Commission in 1765. In the evening of 29 November 1830, the November insurgents fought a successful battle against the Volhynia Regiment on the western edge of the garden, which enabled them to capture the nearby Arsenal with all arms stored there. During World War II the area of the park was outside the Jewish ghetto. The park and the Palace suffered significant damage during the Warsaw Rising. It was where the insurgent Chrobry I Battalion, among others, fought.

Post-war period

After the war the area of the park was expanded to 11.8 ha by adding some neighbouring grounds which were not rebuilt from war damage. Among the park's oldest trees, dating back to the late 19th century, are specimen of the ginkgo biloba, eastern black walnut, Turkish hazel and Caucasian wingnut. At the beginning of the second decade of the 21st century, thanks to the numerous presence of old trees and shrub clusters, the park was a summer nesting area for 27–29 bird species, with a similar number of bird species spending winter there. Noteworthy examples of garden architecture include a pond with an artificial cascade, a flowerbed on the Palace's axis and a modern playground. An archaeological field survey was conducted in the northern section of the park in 2013-2014 in search of the Bund archive, but the effort was unsuccessful.

Surrounding

In the western section of the park, facing the former Nalewki Street, there is a partially preserved Baroque gate with a fragment of the original fencing. At the eastern edge there are the Krasiński Palace (presently owned by the national Library) and the Supreme Court complex (1996–1999). To the west of the park, there are the building of the Royal Arsenal, which houses the State Archaeological Museum, and the monument to the Heroes of the Battle of Monte Cassino (unveiled in 1999). The site of the pre-war Simons' Passage has a monument to the Warsaw Insurgents, unveiled in 1989.
