Erected in the roundabout at the junction of Żwirki i Wigury Street, Wawelska Street and Raszyńska Street, the Airman Monument is commemorates Polish airman. It is a replica of the monument that once stood in Unii Lubelskiej Square and was destroyed in 1944.
The statute was designed in 1923 by Edward Wittig. The monument was unveiled on 11 November 1932 in Unii Lubelskiej Square at the edge of Pole Mokotowskie (literally Mokotów Field), the then location of Warsaw's airport.
On 2 May 1942, Jan Gut and Jan Bytnar, nom de guerre "Rudy", painted Fighting Poland anchors on the plinth of the monument using a pen specially designed by "Rudy".
In 1944, the monument was destroyed by the Germans as part of the planned city demolition undertaken after the fall of the Warsaw Uprising.
The replica of the monument, made by Alfred Jesion, was unveiled on 9 September 1967 at the exit of the representative avenue leading from the Warsaw Okęcie Airport. The front wall of the 9-metre light-grey Silesian marble plinth has an engraving showing the Polish Air Force checkerboard.
